Press Release

Yesterday (14 July) one hundred delegates from industry, Whitehall, media and academia attended the Nanotechnology - UK Challenges to Commercialisation conference at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in Westminster.

At the conference Dr Diana Montgomery, Chemical Industries Association Director, launched Nanotechnology - Linking the Supply Chain Forum.  Speaking at the event Dr Montgomery said:

"The UK has great potential to be the key global player in the development of nanotechnology to drive new commercial success and solve many of societies challenges.  However new technology means new regulation that will impact the whole supply chain - so it is essential that key players act to ensure the success of nanotechnology in the UK by engaging with each other and decision makers now."

In a message to the Conference, Science Minister, Rt Hon David Willets MP said:

"The UK has the expertise in nanotech to lead a global revolution in manufacturing.  But we must involve the general public in this process just have we've done recently in debating the ramifications of synthetic biology. It is vital for scientists, industry and government to discuss openly the potential uses for nanomaterials, as well as reassuring people that potential hazards are properly managed to minimise risk to human health and the environment."

The remit of Nanotechnology - Linking the Supply Chain Forum will be to:

·        Shape regulation

·        Strengthen links down the supply chain

·        Ensure sustainable development of nanotechnology

The Forum offers:

·        Regular email updates and a dedicated webpage

·        Several meetings a year to exchange views - including with policy makers

·        Yearly seminar with relevant external presenters

The Forum is for:

·        Any UK business which has an interest in nanotechnology

·        Regulatory Affairs/Product Managers

·        Service providers

Membership of the Forum is free to Chemical Industries Association Members and further details of membership can be found at www.cia.org.uk/events.php
