Press Release

With the demise of the Regional Development Agencies, the chemical and pharmaceutical sector is leading the way in combining national sectoral leadership and local and practical business support for chemistry-using businesses – large and small.

The Chemical Industries Association and Chemicals Northwest (the Regional Chemical Initiative, based in Warrington) have signed Heads of Terms and are continuing formal discussions which, if successful, will see CNW become part of the CIA’s UK- wide operation.

In efforts to tackle the deficit, government has confirmed the closure of the Regional Development Agencies and the establishment of Local Enterprise Partnerships.  One consequence is that the funding to Regional Chemical Initiatives is being reduced or withdrawn.

The Regional Chemical Initiatives in the North East, Yorkshire, Humberside and the North West, as well as the Scottish equivalent, have all worked increasingly closely with CIA over the past year or so to promote the sector. This potential new relationship means that the £10.2 billion North West sector stretching across the north west of England will become an official arm of CIA, with the CNW brand and a physical presence in the region retained.

Speaking after the signing, CNW Chairman Tony Bastock said: “this potential partnership sees the private sector stepping in where government has had to step away.  Through its national sectoral lead, CIA will offer CNW members increased representational presence and continuity of local business support activities”.

CIA President John Saul said “The North West offers the largest and most profitable concentration of chemical manufacturers in the UK.  It is a region that has an unrivalled and rich history of scientific innovation and discovery.   I believe that this development will help chemistry-using businesses in the region – large and small - maintain and enhance that proud heritage”.
